My husband is a gamer and slight audiophile so when I was given the opportunity to review Able Planet’s NC200 Noise Canceling Headphones I jumped at it. I have to say I did very little testing of these headsets myself since Don took them and won’t give them back to me.
The NC200 is priced at $99 but if you shop around they can be found at places like Amazon for around $50. I have to say both of us are quite impressed with them. They fold for easy traveling and come with their own pouch for storage or you can purchase a sturdier case from Able Planet. The cord is detachable from the headphones to prevent tangling and possible damage when storing them in the case. They fit snuggly but aren’t too tight as to be uncomfortable.
When the noise canceling feature is turned off the sound is just like any other headphones available but once you flip that switch and turn the noise canceling on it’s amazing. No headset will eliminate all background noise but this mutes them to a point you don’t notice them. When Don has them on he can’t hear when I’m sitting right next to him. I’m not too fond of that but he will tell you otherwise. There’s a slight hum which I found out is the white noise that’s part of the noise canceling feature and is there with all noise canceling headsets whether you paid $99 or $299.
One thing we noticed is when the noise canceling feature is on you may need to turn the volume down on your stereo or computer. When Don was playing a game he had me listen and when the noise canceling was on I could hear subtle little sounds within the game that aren’t audible with other headphones. These sounds were a babbling brook, birds chirping as well as a few others that gave me the feeling of being inside the game not an outsider looking in. For music the bass is a little booming but even for Don it wasn’t a negative and I understand that’s also a common feature in headphones.
The only con was the cord is a little short. It could be about 6-8 inches longer but that’s not something to make us say, no we won’t use them. It’s more of an observation than anything else. We do have an extension we purchased several years ago that we could use if we felt it was necessary.
Our opinion, and I say ours since Don is the one using them. They are well worth the price and are comparable to any out there that sell for double the price.
