Several years ago I relocated from Chicago to Alabama and I came to the conclusion I hate moving. There I said it, I don’t like moving. I love Alabama and I’m glad I made the move but I don’t like the hassle of packing, loading and unloading. The unpacking is fun because that’s what turns that new house into my home.
When I was growing up my parents moved a total of 3 times. Of course I had to go with them but they did all the work. When I got older I moved a couple of times on my own but hired movers to do the job for me.
When Don and I moved from Chicago to the Alabama it was an exciting move but not a fun one as we did it all ourselves. No long distance movers for us, we rented a truck and I got to drive it. Being 5’2″ my least favorite part of driving the truck was getting in and out. It’s hard to get your foot up to your waist then try to get some leverage to pull yourself up and into the seat. Getting out was easier but I think falling from that height caused permanent damage to the knees and hips.
That move was also a bit scary for me. I was use to driving across the country as I’d driven from Chicago west to Yellowstone and Montana with only a 9 year old for company. I drove from Chicago to Florida with just myself and an 11 year old. Those were fun trips but for some reason being newly married and driving to a new home alone in a truck made me a bit nervous.
The nervousness set in the first day on the road when I was following Don. During the day it was easy to keep an eye on him but once the sun went down and it started raining I got panicky. I couldn’t see which car ahead of me was his, I didn’t know where I was and I freaked. I called him crying and he had to get off the highway and wait for me so we could stop for the night.
Once we got settled in our new home I made the decision; I’m not moving again. I’ve already told Don the my next move is when they carry me out in a pine box. Or when we win the lottery and we can build our dream home and buy all new furnishings. Then we won’t need any movers, just the clothes on our back and a few boxes of treasures.
