Dee, knew that my gaming buddy and I had grown tired of the complexity and the playing time of our favorite game and was looking for something as fun but simpler. When GMT Games offered a review copy of “Combat Commander: Europe” she knew if she turned it down I would have her head on a spike (just kidding folks)! Well I can tell you “Combat Commander: Europe” was exactly what we were looking for. With my old favorite I was lucky to get three to four turns done in a five hour gaming session leaving the game unfinished, with “Combat Commander Europe” it is not unusual to get two games completed per session. I don’t think I have to tell you how much I’m loving this. “Combat Commander: Europe” comes with three card decks one each for the German, Russian, and American nationalities. It is these cards that regulate the flow and ebbs of the game by controlling what actions you can perform with your game pieces (counters) (ex: movement, firing, combat results). It has six back-printed mapsheets for a total of 12 different playable areas. Mapsheets have graphic depictions of the terrain which effects movement , protection from incoming fire, and the ability to see enemy units. A detailed rulebook that explains well how to play this game. One of the strengths of “Combat Commander : Europe” is the use of scenarios to setup game situations . The game comes with a scenario booklet with twelve scenarios based on actual WWII battles. Furthermore, there are design your own rules so the player can create his own situations. The cardboard game pieces called counters represents squads (10 – 12 men), half-squads (4 – 6 men), weapon crews (2 – 6 men), leaders and heros (1 man), weapons (machine guns, mortars, cannons) and informational counters. The game also includes a track display to keep track of important information and several player aid cards with important charts. Wargame difficulty level is based on a 10 point system with 1 being the easiest and 10 the most advanced. My opinion this game is rated between 4 and a 5.
If you looking for a challenging hobby or pastime I can’t recommend this game enough. It is not so hard that you need a PHD to play nor so easy that you quickly become bored. If you are a history buff it allows you to interact instead of being a passive spectator. I also think that this can be an excellent hobby for a parent and child to share. This has turned into a lifetime hobby for me and if given a chance it could be the same for you.
You can purchase Combat Commander Europe retails for $79 and can be purchased at GMT Games and other retailers such as Amazon.com
