Do you remember how old you were when you decided what you wanted to be when you grew up? Did your career choice change from week to week, from wanting to be a nurse, teacher, astronaut or any variety of fun, awesome jobs or careers?
For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a doctor. My mind stayed focused on one goal, medicine and being a doctor. When I was in my junior year in high school I started checking out colleges and medical schools and I really wanted to go to The University of Hawaii. If I were going to go away to school I might as well go someplace awesome. I even went as far as applying and got accepted but then I realized I didn’t like school and had no idea why I’d choose a career that had 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and lets not forget about residency. That’s another 3-7 years depending on what specialty I decided on. That’s 11-16 additional years before I could have my own practice. No, not for me, I wanted to get out of school but I still wanted a career in medicine.
Then the summer between my junior and senior year I was a candy striper at a local hospital and I developed a crush on a Respiratory Therapist. This was in 1974 and he looked liked Dr. Joe Gannon from the T.V show Medical Center. Dr. Gannon was played by Chad Everett and in my eyes was soooo handsome. I’d follow this therapist around and watched what he did and decided that’s what I wanted to do. Of course the thought of working side by side with MY Dr. Joe Gannon probably had a lot to do with it. The day after I decided what I was going to do with the rest of my life I called the hospital to find out what I needed to do to get a job there and the next day I found a college with a Respiratory Therapy program.
I stayed in that career for 30 years and for the most part I loved my job but now that I’m not longer working in that field and I’m trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life I find I’m changing my mind and directions every other day. I want to write the next best American novel. I want to run my own business. I want to volunteer my time helping people. I want to get better at photography. I want to take up a new hobby and develop my creative side.
What do you want to do with the rest of your life?
