It’s no secret I’m a Days of Our Lives fan. In recent years I’ve watched off and on but kept up with what was happening by reading the Day’s Ahead sites Salem Place Forum. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy watching the show but more that the show was boring to watch.
Storylines kept on for months and months and they had maybe one decent storyline a quarter, if that. The characters became people I didn’t recognize anymore and the sci-fi aspect was just a bit too much. People returning from the dead, brain chips, woman giving birth to babies she had no idea she had. Well, the list could go on and on but I’m sure you get the idea.
I understand Soaps aren’t real life but more an escape from our daily lives. It’s a place where you can visit friends daily and live vicariously through them but that changed a couple of decades ago.
I’m here to say, Days of Our Lives is back. Ken Corday promises to be going back to the roots of Soaps and bringing back core families, more dynamic couples and better storylines. They promise to focus on a few core characters and hopefully they’ll stop the revolving door of meaningless characters with no personality only to let them go the moment we start liking them. Dario comes to mind on this one.
This past Monday marked the beginning of the New, Improved, Days of Our Lives. There are a team of new writers and so far what they’ve brought is refreshing as well as interesting. I do realize it’s only been a week and the entire week revolved around the reveal of a new set and the return of some of our favorite characters. Marlena, John, Carrie, Austin (played by the original Patrick Muldoon) as well as Jack. They’re back to showing love and happiness in Salem and that’s been sorely lacking for quite a while now. We’ve also seen the ending of old storylines and the beginnings of new ones so this is a true new beginning.
Bo and Hope discover some old bank statements from an overseas account sent to Alice with the same amount being deposited then withdrawn a few days later. Looks like they’re on the trail of finding out what Alice’s secret was.
Victor proposed to Maggie and even though her answer was interrupted by Jack’s sudden appearance she is going to say yes.
John got out of his wheelchair and arrested for embezzlement and securities fraud.
Austin is a forensic accountant who’s been involved in the case.
Abe invested money for the city’s retirement fund in Basic Black which has done very well. Now we need to see how John’s arrest plays into all of this.
Rafe was ordered by the FBI to do the arrest so I’m left wondering if his ties to the FBI were severed or is he still working for them.
Carrie is now a defense attorney. Word has it John’s lawyers will abandon him and Carrie will offer to defend him. Will this put Carrie and Austin on opposite sides since he could be called in as a witness against John.
EJ announced he’s running against Abe for Mayor to improve the public image of the DiMera name. He’s going to ask Nicole to be his campaign manager.
Sami’s going to get a job. Sounds like Sami might be growing up.
Jack will be talking to Jennifer on Monday and telling her where he’s been. Seems he was on assignment working undercover with Afghan drug ring and was held prisoner. His friend was writing his blog and texting Jennifer. Will she leave Dan and go back to Dan again?
There’s still one more new character that’s coming. Someone named Madison who has a cosmetic’s company and will be using Titan to promote it. She’ll be Kate’s business nemesis with her rival company Countess Wilhimena and Sami’s mentor. Plus it will turn out she’s an old friend of Sami’s and she’s going to show her the ropes. Sounds like this could be the beginning of a Kiriakas/DiMera war but this time held in the corporate world and not on the streets of Salem.
Several separate stories that could be interrelated and a few separate ones to keep our interest.
All in all, I’m loving the new Days and I’ve watched every episode since the week before the new set and party. I needed to see how the old storylines ended with Carly who left for a vacation with her son Nicholas, Quinn and Taylor leaving Salem together and the return of Ivan to whisk his Madam Viv away to Bollywood. We also saw the end of the attacks against the prostitutes of Salem with the arrest of Gus and Chloe wake from her coma to land a singing job in Chicago due to the help of Brady. After confronting Kate and putting her in her place Chloe left for Chicago with Kinsey and will hopefully be able to get visitation or shared custody of her son, Parker
I almost forgot. Did you see the door of one of the shops in the Town Square? It’s called Hourglass and the logo on the door is the DOOL’s hourglass.
