Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate Review and Giveaway

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

I’ve been playing around with the newest version of Corel’s Paintshop; Paintshop Pro X5 Ultimate and I’m loving it.  As a matter of fact, there’s so much you can do with a photo I’m learning something new every time I use it.

This newest version has all the same features I loved in PSP Pro X4 with a few added benefits such as Instant Effects which allow you to add artistic effects to any photo and combine different effects for a truly unique look.  You can sort your photos using face recognition (I haven’t tried it out to see if it will do puppy recognition though).  And of course as in previous versions you can work in RAW.

Additional new features are:

New! Graduated Filter effect

The Graduated Filter applies a semi-transparent color gradient to your photos to simulate the effect of using graduated filters with your camera lens. For example, you can darken or tint a sky that appears washed out without affecting the rest of the image. A range of gradient controls means that you can experiment with some creative ways of to use the effect.

New! Share My Trip

Your adventures come to life with interactive Share My Trip projects that map your photos so that you can follow your route on a map or zoom in to view each photo in detail. You can share your photo map as a slideshow online by posting it on your blog or by using the built-in sharing options that let you upload to your Dropbox account and share to Facebook automatically.

 Enhanced! Sharing options

Enhanced social media integration lets you upload your photos simultaneously to your Facebook, Flickr, and Google+ accounts

Enhanced! Layer Styles

The Layers palette now has better access to Layer Styles such as Drop Shadow, Reflection, Glow, and Bevel styles.

Enhanced! HDR tools

High dynamic range (HDR) photography can help you create photos that have stunning depth. You now have more options when you create HDR photos with the Exposure Merge feature, including dedicated black-and-white (B&W) controls, alignment preview, and the ability to easily include moving objects. Improved Auto Brush results help you save time in achieving the effect you want. In addition, the HDR Batch Merge feature provides more control over the results by letting you choose a preset before merging.

New! People

Face tagging lets you identify the people in your photos, making it easy to find and share photos of family and friends, or sync with your social contacts on sharing sites. In addition to manual tagging, you can use face recognition to automatically analyze facial characteristics and help identify people in your photos.

New! Single RAW Photo

You can split a single RAW photo into three exposures and then recombine them selectively to create an HDR-style effect. This process lets you control the exposure of different areas of the photo to bring out more detail

New! Retro Lab

The Retro Lab lets you apply vintage-style color and contrast to your photos to achieve a distinctive look inspired by early LOMO cameras. A variety of controls are available to help you create and fine-tune your own retro style. Then, you can save it as a preset so you’re ready for your next creative project.

For more information,

One feature I discovered that I don’t really know if it’s on previous versions (I told you I learn something new every time I use the program) is Lights Effects where you can aim a spotlight on the portion of the photo you want to highlight and it will put the rest of the photo in shadow.

I’m still not creative enough to do true graphic design but I do love playing around and expanding my knowledge, as a matter of fact the header of Dee Says was done using PSP X5.  Well, someone made the logo for me but the layout and coloring was edited or added  by me.  I even made a flier for our next Senior Center meeting using PSP X5.  I found a free photo online but the background didn’t work with what I wanted to do so using the easy Fill Flood or Color Changer I was able to fix that.

In addition to PSP X5 the Ultimate pack contains

NIK Color Efex Pro 3.0 which has Award -winning photographic filters with over 250 effects and styles and 30+ emulated film types.

REALLUSION FaceFilter Studio 2 which allows you to Revitalize the beauty in your pictures with portrait enhancement tools such as Easily changing facial expressions, eliminate wrinkles, linnes or rough skin and fix over/under exposure.

Creative Collection which takes your designs further with creative extras such as over 100 royalty free stock photos (great for bloggers and online publishers), over 25 unique brushes to make your designs pop and dozens of new textures and presets.

In addition to sending me a copy of PSP X5 Ultimate to review Corel sent 4 copies for me to give away.  That’s a $99.99 value though you can get it at Amazon for $49.99 and Corel has it on a Black Friday sale for $39.99

  10. I like the enhanced text tool. I’m not an artist, so I do a lot with text when I have to design a flyer or poster. Trying to keep the titles interesting is one way to not have to draw pictures! My husband needs Corel Draw, too, for his new laser cutting machine, so I’d love to win a copy instead of having to buy it!
